Wave variability along the world’s continental shelves and coasts: Monitoring opportunities from satellite Earth observation

چکیده

Insight on wave regimes along the world’s coastlines is important for virtually all coastal and nearshore marine activities, installations, planning protection. Waves are pervasive dominant source of energy driving extreme sea levels, transport pollutants sediments, erosion, a major contributor to risks flooding. We quantify global spatio-temporal conditions coasts evaluate needs Earth Observation strategies, with aim, notably, that derived scales change can contribute optimisation these strategies. A timescale 30 days found in variability is, average, spatially correlated just over synoptic 5 degrees’ regional scale (≈ 550 km at equator). This regional-scale dimension suggests timing design traditional field surveys observations relevant vast array which may be expensive terms human resources, complemented by information gained from satellite throws light wave-energy coastlines.

Sea Level Changes Along Global Coasts from Satellite Altimetry, GPS and Tide Gauge

The average global sea level was rising through the 20th century as a result of global warming [8, 9, 26]. The Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimated that between 1901 and 2010, the mean sea level rate 1.7±0.2 mm/yr and increased to 3.2±0.4 mm/yr between 1993 and 2010, and projected that in 2100 the largest increase in global average sea level ...

The effect of continental shelves on tides

Coastal tides are influenced by several factors and one of the most important of these is the character of the adjacent continental shelf. A continental margin theory is derived and used to discuss several different aspects of the effect " 'smooth" continental shelves have on tides. The main results are as follows. (a) The theory suggests, in accordance with observations, that semi-diurnal tide...

Modeling Earth Observation Satellite Data Semantically

This paper presents preliminary research results on using semantic technologies to model Earth observation satellite data. The research goal is to enhance the data search functionalities that satellite data catalogues provide to researchers and practitioners. An ontology that captures characteristics of satellite data is introduced. How to utilize this ontology in assisting data search and how ...

Earth Observation Opportunities in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sectors

Aquaculture ranks among the most dynamic food production industries in the world, with an annual growth rate of 9.2% since 1970 [1]. Both the fisheries and aquaculture sectors are facing strengthened regulations, with an emphasis on improving sustainable growth and environmental protection. The New Earth Observation Markets for Fisheries and Aquaculture (NEMA) project has established a number o...
